Holly and Dirk…Romantic Dutch Wedding

I’ve mentioned before how styling has allowed me to cross paths with some wonderful people, many of whom have gone on to become really special friends. One such serendipitous friendship, which came about thanks to this blog, is that with Holly of inspiring interior blog Avenue Lifestyle. Holly is what I’d call one of my kindred spirits, one of those rare people I’ve been lucky enough to meet who just gets me and all my craziness! She has provided so much advice, fun and encouragement since we first met, both from a career and personal perspective. And so, I was beyond honoured when she asked if I would help to bring the styling of her wedding together in what you will see below was a really special celebration. As it approaches her first anniversary and I’m heading back to Delft to help her and Dirk celebrate (you know you’ve a friend for life when she’s ok with you invading her house for the weekend on her first annivserary!) I thought this post sharing their magical day was long overdue.

Holly chose a soft organic colour palette for the day opting for bridesmaids dresses in mix and match nude lace, while her bespoke blush gown was the perfect showpiece to anchor it all together. Little Lola was a picture in her adorable lace little dress. I adored the delicate chiffon on Holly’s dress and the different layers at the hem gave it a beautiful ethereal flow, reminding me of an elegant flower fairy! She enlisted the help of her gorgeous bridesmaids to gather cow parsley and greenery from the surrounding fields the day before the wedding, to create wild and flowing bouquets. The combination of jasmine, olive leaf, eucalyptus and huge coral peonies brought the perfect pop of colour to bring the palette to life. Her photographer Anouschka Rokebrand did such a beautiful job capturing every moment of the day.

You’d never think looking at the amazing space below that Holly and Dirk’s original wedding venue was cancelled just two months before their wedding day. Talk about stress central! What ensued was a mad search to find an alternative that wouldn’t make them compromise all the original plans. While I’m sure it’s not an experience they’d ever like to repeat, I think in the end it all worked out for the best as the olive green industrial space they found was transformed into an elegant garden party inspired wedding. Her chosen shades of fig, blush, cream and pistachio worked so well in the space, you’d think the venue had been the first choice all along. I arrived the day before the wedding in what has to be some of the wettest stormiest weather I’ve ever encountered (which is never a good sign as we Irish are fairly familiar with the rain!).  But we got to work ignoring the downpours, feeling encouraged with every step that made the space take shape.

Holly had put a mammoth amount of work into planning the day before we got to this moment. A selection of vintage furniture was hired from Dutch company FabriekNL, she handmade cotton runners and sewed each of the 80 linen napkins from scratch two days before the wedding! Natural organic palm plates from Verterra paired well with simple white ceramics from Ikea, while vintage silver and bone cutlery from Helene Millot Furnishings brought the perfect hint of opulence. As a finishing touch we threaded strands of jasmine along the length of each table and grouped clusters of gold candlesticks at various points for added atmosphere and lighting. The string of bistro lights (which arrived thanks to a last minute 6 hour roadtrip, undertaken the day before the wedding by Holly’s Dad) brought all the styling together, creating a distinct garden party feel.

Their beautiful ceremony took place in Delft City Hall, a historic building dating from the 17th century. It’s rare for me to attend the ceremony of one of the weddings I have styled (I’m usually running around putting all the finishing touches on a space) so it was a special treat to be there to witness their exchange of vows which movingly Holly spoke in Dutch, while Dirk recited them in English. It was the perfect symbol of their two worlds that were now officially interconnected.

Homemade rhubarb and ginger jam greeted each guest as they arrived to their place, while blueberries threaded through bamboo sticks brought an unexpected little detail to the wine glasses. The catering for the day was really wonderful, undertaken by husband and wife team, Heeerlijke. Each course was laid out on the long tables in beautiful terracotta bowls which encouraged all of the guests to mingle and chat, achieving the Italian family style gathering that Holly was hoping for. Some of the highlights of the food for me were the tomato bruschetta and goats cheese tarts, I could have eaten them all day. (Eagle eyed readers might even spot me taking full advantage of the delicious nibbles below!)

The celebrations continued long into the evening, with some of the most moving speeches I have ever heard. It finished with a night of epic dancing and the gorgeous bride and groom above didn’t stop beaming from one minute to the next. It was truly one of the most enjoyable weddings I have ever attended and it has been lovely to see Holly, Dirk and Lola go from strength to strength in the last year. Here’s to your first anniversary love birds and to a lifetime of adventures ahead, can’t wait to celebrate with you this weekend!
